Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction surgery is a procedure that aims to help patients regain their self-confidence by restoring the shape, size and appearance of the breast after a mastectomy. This can be achieved with implant-based reconstruction or autologous (own tissue) reconstruction.
Implant-based reconstruction involves placing a silicone or saline breast implant in the breast area after the mastectomy.
Autologous reconstruction uses the patient's own tissue to reconstruct the breast. This can be done using tissue from the abdomen, back, or buttocks. The tissue is transferred to the breast area and shaped to create a natural-looking breast.
Both techniques have advantages and disadvantages. The best option for a patient will depend on their individual circumstances, including their health, body shape, and desired outcome.

Private health insurance will cover a significant portion of your breast reconstruction in the private setting. However, given the complexities of these surgeries it is normal to expect some out of pocket expenses- the so-called "gap".

The recovery after breast reconstruction varies depending on the type of reconstruction. Typically recovery from implant-based reconstructions is a little quicker and patients are often back to desk based work from as early as 2 weeks and more strenous activity (including gym and exercise) from the 4 week mark. For autologous reconstructions, particularly involving the abdominal tissue (DIEP flap) these estimates may be a week or 2 later.

As with any surgery, breast reconstruction carries a number of risks. These vary considerably from patient to patient and depending on the reconstruction technique you have decided on with your surgeon. Occasionally major complications requiring prolonged hospitalisation, unplanned return to the operating theatre or readmission to hospital can occur.

The goals of breast reconstruction vary from patient to patient. At a minimum, most women want to feel confident in clothing, however for some women the appearance out of clothes and feel of the breast is also very important. These goals are harder to achieve, but some reconstructions (particularly those involving natural body tissue) can feel very soft and natural. As a general rule, implant reconstructions will have a tendency to feel and look less natural but sometimes very good results can be achieved.
